Within the context of the Collective Management of Copyright and Related Rights project, a workshop was held in Buenos Aires on 30 and 31 of October 2019. A total of 16 experts in the field discussed for two days issues related to the research project and the steps to be taken.
The project's starting point is a comparative study of the regulations applicable to collecting societies in eight countries: Mexico, Costa Rica, Colombia, Peru, Chile, Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay. The event brought together experts and representatives of collecting societies. The project promotes an analysis based on both academia and practice to obtain reliable empirical results.
On the first day, a presentation was made regarding the motivation for the project and the economic relevance for the region. Also, a draft document was presented for the exchange of opinions during the workshop. On the second day, the following issues were discussed: organization of collecting societies, corporate governance, relations with right-holders and users, and transparency in revenue distribution. At the workshop's conclusion, the participants identified the most significant questions to be answered concerning these issues, which will serve as a reference in the comparative study of national regulations.
